- 1 Bag Your favorite Bucket of Bread Brand Dough Probably best to use Traditional White for this recipe.
- 1/2 Cup Vegetable Oil Or other fairly flavorless oil.
- 1 Cup Lukewarm Water About 98-105 °F
- 1½ tsp Baking Powder NOT Baking SODA!
Prepare the Dough:
Secondly, mix the flour component bag with the baking powder, water, and oil.
Feel free to reach into the bowl with your hands to ensure all the dry bits are very well mixed. You don't want anything dry remaining. You also want the dough to have a smooth texture.
Thirdly, simply divide the dough into 16 even balls.
Then, cover these for about 15 minutes (up to a couple hours).
Cook the Tortillas:
On a medium hot griddle or pan, heat up the tortillas. Start to cook each side for about 45 seconds to a full minute. The bottom should start to get some nicely browned color in spots. At this point, If they are browning up too fast, turn down the heat. If not fast enough for nice coloration, turn up the heat. If big bubbles appear, then just push them down flat. For the most part, just keep flipping in 15-20 second intervals after the initial heating to ensure the color is how you want it to look. Finally, as soon as these look good, stack them for serving!
Tortilla Tips:
Another key point is tortillas can be thicker than desired for a number of reasons. For the purpose of thinner tortillas, you can certainly try these tips:
- Lining the press with thick plastic: Use a circle cut from a freezer bag instead of paper to make it easier to peel thinner tortillas.
- Pressing again: The press may make tortillas a little thinner the more you press them.
- Using a rolling pin: After pressing, use a rolling pin to press the tortilla a little thinner.
- Using a smaller ball of dough: Roll out the dough into flat rounds that are about half the desired size, then let it rest for at least 15 minutes.
- Using like tissue paper: Roll out the dough until it's tissue paper thin, then use it immediately.
Refrigerate Tortillas:
Finally, you can store these for up to a week in the refrigerator! Just reheat them in a microwave-safe container with a wet paper towel for moisture. Microwave uncovered checking the temps at 15 second intervals. Keep them covered to hold in the heat while being served.
