When mixing by hand, there is a secret (not so secret) trick to making it a little easier to stir.
Wooden spoons give you a firm strong handle to hold (don’t forget to flip it!), making stirring easier and more effective–and without any fear of the handle breaking. It also provides you with a solid tool for scraping things off the sides and bottom of your bowl. A handful of bakers use a wooden spoon. Others use their hands. That is going to have to be up to you; but in the end, using your hands can sometimes be a sticky situation.
Simply, use a wooden spoon to hand mix your bucket. But here’s the trick part, turn the spoon portion into your hand and stir it with the handle. This will make it much easier to stir and clean off. It also is easier on the arms!
Of course, a stand mixer is your fastest and easiest choice; however, using this tip and trick sure does help when you’re mixing by hand! This also helps give dough a nice boost of oxygen exposure. This helps gluten strands connect to each other.
For folks who want to spend a little more money there is another way. You can buy special wooden spoons on the market especially designed to mix dough. These are everything from Danish dough whisks to wooden made with holes in their design. Advantages of these products help stirring anything better than ordinary spoons especially sticky doughs.
