About the Veteran-Owned Baking Kit Company

Bucket of Bread is a veteran-owned baking kit company based in La Crosse, Wisconsin. We craft small-batch baking kits made with clean, wholesome ingredients. Just add water and your imagination—no kneading or complicated steps.

You can make crusty loaves, soft cinnamon buns, chewy pretzels, fluffy naan, and so much more. Our kits come in recyclable buckets or compact boxes for easy storage and zero waste.

Even better, every purchase helps fight hunger. Because food should fill stomachs and hearts.

From Army Boots to Oven Mitts

I’m Chris Wysong—Army veteran, baker, and founder of Bucket of Bread. I joined the U.S. Army right out of high school and spent over 20 years in service. During that time, I traveled the world, including to Desert Storm, Korea, Panama, Guatemala, and Iraq.

While stationed in Germany, I fell in love with real bakery bread—fresh, simple, and comforting. Then, in Iraq, I found myself baking with Iraqi Army cooks. We didn’t share a language, but we shared a purpose: feeding others.

That unexpected moment reminded me that food connects people—even in the hardest places.

While deployed in Northern Iraq from 2004 to 2005, Chris joined Iraqi Army bakers in their kitchen, learning firsthand how they prepared bread for their troops. It was an unexpected moment of connection and comfort in the middle of military service.

The Bucket That Changed Everything

While living in Wisconsin, I kept baking. I made loaves for events and charity fundraisers. That’s when people started calling me “The Bread Guy.”

One night, I had a dream—literally. I imagined putting my dough recipe in a bucket and using that as a platform to help people. I tried it, and it worked.

With support from local small business resources I turned that dream into a plan. After renovating a facility, passing inspections, finding insurance, and securing licenses, Bucket of Bread was born.

Why We’re Different

Our mission is to make baking easier—and more meaningful. That’s why we donate at least 10% of profits to charities fighting food insecurity.

We also allow customers to send buckets directly to food banks across the U.S. When you buy from us, you’re feeding more than just your family.

Plus, our mixes are free from preservatives, added sugars, artificial colors, and unnecessary fillers. Because real food should come from real ingredients.
